ARTUS – GÁBOR GODA COMPANY: Snow Queen (2003)
Music-vision-dance theatre based on the story by Andersen
Tale and magic
The play is made for children, although it is a guaranteed experience for adults, too. The ideal age group is 5-12.
The little girl is in the focus of the performance, who sets out to save her friend – on barefoot in the snow, in freeze, through forests and magical places. It is the will-power, determination and love of the little girl that the performance aims at conveying. A child is also capable of following through all what she has started no matter what obstacles she has to overcome. As Andersen writes:
‘Don’t you see how enormous this little girl is? All by her own, on barefoot, she has started off for the unknown, and people, animals stand by her to help her. We cannot give her power, her power lies in her good heart and innocent soul. If she cannot find the way to the palace of the Snow Queen on her own and cannot take out the glass splinters from Kay’s eye and heart we will not be able to help her, either.’
The performance primarily builds on the visual elements, on music and movement, but for the sake of understanding the story we use text as well. The singer has the role of the tale-teller, too. According to our plans for adapting the performance to foreign circumstances this would be solved with playing back the recording of the text told by a local actress. The seven dancer-actors appear in 28 roles such as: children, elves, robbers, reindeers, crows, flowers, witches… etc.
At certain points of the performance we use the auditorium as well (e.g.: the attack of the robbers) and the children are also involved in the happenings (e.g.: evoking the wind – they are asked to blow the stage).
The performance needs a traditional stage size, 10m wide, 13m deep and 6-7m high.
The set comprises six mountains that are round from the outside, hollow from the inside and move on wheels. Once they are turned out they provide space for a scene. E.g.: the hall of the Snow Queen, a well, the hut of the Lapp Woman and the Finnish Woman, icicles, snow flowers…etc.
Above the mountains the surface is flat but broken imitating icicles. Before them there are white window-surfaces that are suitable for video projection. In the middle of the background the outlines of a mock town can be seen.
